Build up to 10,000 steps a day

Jumping straight to 10,000 is how most people quit. Start from what you walk now and add a little each week.

Your plan

Take a rest day when you need one. If you have a health condition, check with your doctor before you start.

How it works

1Find your normal day

Your average from the last week is a good starting point.

2Pick a goal

Each week adds about 10%, and at least 500 steps, until you reach it.

3Follow the weeks

Hit each week's number on most days before moving up.

Questions

Do I have to reach 10,000?

No. 10,000 is a popular round number, not a medical rule. 7,000 to 8,000 a day is still a great goal for many people.

What if I miss a week?

Repeat it. Moving up slowly is better than giving up.

What counts as a step?

Anything your phone or watch counts: walking to work, the stairs, a walk with the dog.
